Welcome to The Pattie Project!

The Pattie Project is the creation of the students of SOC 369: Food, Culture, and Society, a special topics course in Sociology at the School of Arts & Sciences of The College of New Rochelle, New York, Spring 2011.  In the course we critically explored questions related to food and eating through a sociological perspective, including consideration of the historical, cultural, and structural factors that form the social context through which we encounter food.

For The Pattie Project, we formed small groups to investigate and analyze the social context of one type of pattie: Jamaican patties, Cornish pasties, empanadas, pastelitos, and Hot Pockets.   Each group researched recipes, origins, production and distribution patterns, history, cultural meanings, and more related to their chosen pattie.

This website presents the findings of the Pattie Project. Please click on the Pattie Pages above to learn more about patties!
